Klondike Flooding Update (Monday, May 15, 11:30AM):

From Yukon Government (10:30am):
When returning home after a flood, each individual must assess their property and home to ensure no hazard exists. Read more here: Find out what to do after a flood | Government of Yukon
On Sunday evening, the Klondike River Flood Warning was downgraded to a Flood Watch. Water levels remain very high, but are not currently at open water flood thresholds. Floodwaters in Rock Creek and Henderson Corner have receded. Read the details here: https://flood-atlas.service.yukon.ca/
Emergency Support Services is still providing accommodation supports for anyone whose home has been affected by flooding. You can register by phone 24 hours a day by calling 867-332-4597.
The North Klondike Highway remains open to one lane. Please continue to drive with caution as crews are working in the area – thank you for your patience!

From City of Dawson:
Flood Situation
We are in communication with our partners at Yukon Government and are no longer expecting any dangers to our residents as a result of ice jams, but advise residents to continue to be aware of high water levels and be prudent around waterways. Surface melt/spring runoff is an issue every year, but is of greater concern this year, given the snowpack, amount of groundwater in our area, the height of tributaries, and the recent flood activity in the Klondike valley. We are facing a number of minor issues, but nothing of public concern at this time. Should the situation change, we will inform you.

Road Issues
Seasonal snowmelt is causing issues to roads in and around our community. Public Works department is doing good work to mitigate these issues. Depending on conditions, roads may have to be closed. We aim to open them as soon as we can. Closures are in the interest of public safety and to allow our crews to address the issues. Your patience is appreciated on these matters. Please respect signage and crews while they do this work, and do not travel on these road. Of importance to note:
Mary McLeod Road
Remains closed. Please avoid traveling on this road. We hope to open this road once other in-town priorities are addressed.

Quigley Landfill
The road to the landfill remains closed is being worked on today, and we expect to have an update later today as to our operations at the Quigley landfill this week.

Ground Movement
We are aware of minor ground movement and washouts in and around the community. City of Dawson met with Yukon Geological Survey staff last week to assess some of the areas of concern in our region, for which we expect to have a report this week. If we have any important information to share, we will let residents know.
Should you notice ground movement within the municipality, let us know. If it is an emergency, call 911. If it is of concern, email info@cityofdawson.ca or call 993-7400. If it is something on our trails or greenspaces, let us know at recreation@cityofdawson.ca or 993-7400 ext 299.

Flood Relief - Donations and Volunteers
We know our community members want to help those who have suffered as a result of the recent flood activities. Whether it be it through donations or volunteer assistance in cleanup and relief efforts. While we are supportive of these initiatives, it is not typically the role of a municipal government to take a lead role in this. Should we hear of any charitable or community-led initiatives that aim to help our friends and neighbors who have suffered, we will do our best to share the information where it's pertinent.

Emergency Preparedness
Emergencies and disasters can happen anytime. We advise residents to be aware of how to be best prepared for future emergencies by visiting: https://yukon.ca/en/emergencies-and-safety/emergency-preparedness

Future Flood Updates
We will continue to share updates as we receive them from our partners. Unless the situation changes, we do not plan to provide daily updates on flooding, but will continue to communicate on other municipal affairs, as needed. Should you have any concerns or comments about municipal affairs, do not hesitate to contact us via info@cityofdawson.ca or 993-7400.

Flood Update - Dawson City - May 13, 2023 - 7:30pm
A Flood Advisory is still in place in the Klondike Valley which continues to affect residents in low lying areas in our region. City of Dawson staff is working with our partners to help mitigate flooding issues as best we can.
Much of this is due to the high river volumes as well as groundwater melt. We expect some of these issues from groundwater to continue.
Sandbags are available as stations along Front St for anybody who requires them.
We do know that groundwater melt is also causing issues around town, including drainage and ground movement. Public Works is working tirelessly to ensure water is getting to the river and out of town. Ground movement is also on our minds. City of Dawson met with Yukon Geological Survey staff yesterday to look at some of the areas of concern in our region, we expect to have a report this week, if there is any important information to share, we will do so at that time.
The North Klondike is closed, as is the Goldfields loop. Highways and Public Works is doing what they can to fix the issues and assist locals to reach their destinations. Please limit your travel to alleviate the enormous workload and issues they are facing.
Thank you to everyone who is sandbagging and offering assistance with flood mitigation and relief. We know people are looking for resources on donations, where to volunteer and lend a hand. If we have more information on where help is needed or donations can be dropped off, we will let the public know.
Another update will be shared tomorrow morning before 11am.

  • The Klondike River Flood Warning remains in place. As the river breaks up, ice jams continue to cause localized flooding in Henderson Corner and Rock Creek. Water levels may continue to go up and down quickly over the next few days as the jams at Henderson Corner and Rock Creek release. As of Thursday at 9:30 am, there were two ice jams above the Henderson Corner ice jam. They are likely to melt in place because of the way the channel is shaped there.
  • In Henderson Corner, a berm has been placed along the highway on the river side to enable re-opening the highway.
  • The highway berm has slowed the water moving across the highway into Henderson Corner. Water levels on properties across the highway are slowly dropping. On the river side of the highway berm, properties remain flooded.
  • There is still water on people’s properties in Rock Creek, but water levels are slowly dropping.
  • Power is restored to the majority of properties in Rock Creek and Henderson. Yukon Energy is reconnecting power as water levels drop.

May 8, 2023 - 1:58pm - Flood Watch Advisory- Lower Yukon River-Dawson Region

Current conditions: River ice upstream of Dawson is decaying more rapidly than downstream of Dawson as of the last flight survey at midday on May 7. The current water level is already high relative to historic levels at which breakup is initiated.

Water level forecast: Water levels are expected to rise rapidly once ice break begins on the Yukon River. The Klondike River may cause a localized breakup of the ice on the Yukon River in front of Dawson prior to breakup on the Yukon River above Dawson. Current conditions suggest ice jams are likely to form downstream of Dawson during breakup at discharge volumes much higher than average. The risk of flooding to Dawson is well above average.

Weather forecast: Showers and a high of 8°C Monday May 8. High of 13°C May 9 followed by temperatures in the high teens for the rest of the week and mostly clear.

The complete advisory has been published in the Flood Atlas, which can be accessed by following this link: https://flood-atlas.service.yukon.ca/
