Calculation of Property Taxes
The Government of Yukon is responsible for providing the municipality with current, accurate and equitable property assessments (property value) for property taxation purposes. These assessments are broken down by land and improvements.

The City of Dawson Council establishes by bylaw, on an annual basis, the tax rates to be levied upon all taxable real property in the City of Dawson taxation authority.

A tax rate is the rate of taxation applied against the value of property within a municipality to collect the revenue required by the various taxation authorities. The tax rate may be expressed in “mills” (dollars in tax paid per thousand dollars of property value) or as a percentage of the property’s value. The City of Dawson’s Tax Rate Bylaw expresses the tax rate as a percentage of the property’s value.

For example a tax rate of 1.56% on a property valued at $100,000 would require a payment of $1,560 in property tax.

Senior Home Owner Grant Program

The City of Dawson provides a Property Tax Home Owner Grant to seniors (60 years of age or over). To be eligible for the Senior Home Owner grant the property owner must occupy the single residential dwelling as a private residence for a minimum of 270 days of the 365 days immediately preceding the date of issue of a real property tax notice. Application for the grant can be made from the date of issuance of the tax notice up to and including July 2nd and upon payment in full of all real property tax demands for the property to which the grant applies. Application for the grant should be made in person at the City of Dawson Office.
